Hi All,

With having Jan off with no meeting and Items coming in slow, I have the news letter now!

Rick is going to give a demo on screen sharing at the next meeting. I will guess there will be lots of questions on that one.

Katie would like to remind folks to bring their flash drives. There is a new upgrade for OS 10.7 to 10.7.3. She has downloaded the 10.7.3 combo and will have it on 3 flash drives for people to copy. For those with slow download speeds this would be helpful. The stand alone 10.7.3 update seems to have problems so they should get the combo.

Gerald would like to have a few minutes at the meeting Monday. He has a few things to update people about the longevity and usage of their older machines.

See you at the meeting John

The January Meeting was canceled for the Holidays and no good night there after was a good night

To all Members:

The Mac club meeting is not going to take place this Monday as it is on the second of January. We the “leaders” thought that not having access to get the Key before the Meeting and the events that we need to reset the Internet router when no one is in the Library would limit the demos that might happen. So we have canceled the Jan 2 meeting. Sorry for the delay but I can not see anyway to work out the problems that have come up in the past when we can not get the Internet up. We are working to make the Feb. meeting a good one. I hope that you all have a Safe and Happy New Year. As I hope that Santa did not leave you a lump of coal for you.

980 Helling Way, Nevada City, CA

Yes there is a Sierra Mousetrap Mac User Group meeting Monday the 5th. It will be our Christmas/Holiday non-demo meeting where we gather and just socialize, ask Questions & get answers (why does my e-mail not work? who will be the next President of the club? Does anyone want to takeover my job? Does anyone want to do the new letter? How is Gerry doing? And other questions). I will bring the coffeepots for hot water and coffee, bring you favorite treat (bread, cookie, cream puff, or whatever) to share and enjoy with others. See you there.

As I was sick last month and missed the meeting (I know I feel behind the times with information), I did get some feedback on how the meeting went ( and my information was “It was a supper job done!” there were suggestions for Demo’s (listed below), as well as information that we all might like to know. I have not heard any firm information as to what the Demo will be at the next meeting and we might need to “wing it” as the cold and flu season is on us all. I herd that Rick might finish up with the Spotlight Demo (if the med’s kick in). Information on Air Drop and Drop Box was requested. We will see what happens.

Demo suggestions
1. Spotlight (continued)
2. Integrated Drives
3. File Sharing
4. Drop Box
5. Air Drop
6. Tutorial on how to distort media in the microwave and end up with pretty
little knick-knacks.

Fetch 5.7 Now Available for those who are interested

There is a free application called LibreOffice.org that pretty much does what Microsoft Office does.

“LibreOffice is the power-packed free, libre and open source personal productivity suite for Windows, Macintosh and GNU/Linux, that gives you six feature-rich applications for all your document production and data processing needs: Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Math and Base” It might be an option for those who do not want to pay for MS Office.

Also there is OpenOffice.org that is free

“OpenOffice.org 3is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages. It can be downloaded and used completely free of charge for any purpose”

PBS Nova program was viewed on Nov 2nd. For those that missed the program ” Steve Jobs, One-Last-Thing”. It is a tribute to Jobs, his history, work and friends. Well worth a viewing.

http://video.pbs.org/program/1219635778/\

Remember everyone to always bring a flash drive to the meeting … just in case there is something that can be shared. I was also told to invite anyone to bring “Mac items for sale”

Well we have had two wild months here for the Mac group.

First we are going to be looking for a interim President until we can vote one in at the first of the year, or just have 2-3 people share the job until we can get a President voted in. Gerrald Davenport is resetting priorities & moving to L.A. to find work. He may show up mow and again but with no sure day or time. I for one would like to thank Gerald for all his hard work and input he has put into our Club while he was involved and his time as President.

Second now I get to figure out this Mail newsletter again. So yes this one is late. Well not late as in after the meeting just late in not two or three days before the meeting.

Keith Thomassen has prepared a talk on “Sharing files with iDisk”, a short power point presentation.
Rick Hartmann has a few things for Monday night including the leftover Spotlight demo on raw queries, some more details on Lion and a demo of AirDrop with Lion on **any** Intel Mac but he is not felling well and we wont know until he shows up or not if this is tonight or next month.

Katie Guilliat is willing to “Officiate” the meeting tonight. She is eager to help so lets help her out. I on the other hand have become sick, I will go get the Key and open the room. But will not stay to share all this nice sickness. I’ll drop off the projector and whatnot and get the stuff back from someone later.

Hi all. I know late as always, which is why, I am putting in my resignation as president, this is a semi-formal notice to the members as I have been trying to do this for some time now.

BUT, lets not dwell on the inevitable or make this a sad thing, I think it is a chance for the group to take what I tried to do and actually make it happen – a formal letter will be issued once the board members work out the details.

The exiting news is that RICK HARTMAN is going to be doing a very informative presentation about SPOTLIGHT and all its tips and tricks. RICK is one of our masters of Mac and Apple knowledge and we should use him when ever we can, and he is free this month. It is one I am looking forward to learn more about.

And then MATT will cover DISK IMAGES, how to use them, what they are, and how to create them.

And then it is Q & A and then some. SO bring your questions and your thinking caps, because it's a night of technical system FUN!!! everyone will get some use out of these topics…

We had a great turn out for our April meeting, a meeting that found us without each other for two months, and it was great getting together.

Amazing what we covered in 2 hours and had time left over for a casual Q & A period.

We also gave away some great items from RadTech.us thanks to Zach we gave away:

ClearCal®: Protective Film for your iPad – clear and anti-glare.

 ScreenSavrz®: Laptop Display Protection – [13 inch- blue] • [15 inch - black] • [17 inch - black] (the item I showcased for you – I got at WWDC back in 2004)

OmniCleanz®: Advanced Multi-Use Cleaner – 1 oz with Optix polishing cloth

	• We also had a presentation — two in fact — from our illustrious man in the sky who flies overhead while we look up in wonderment — Keith Thomassen on scanning photographs, negatives, and slides using the EPSON V300 Scanner; and the information is universal for all scanners, so do not be frightened if you do not have the EPSON V300.

Keith continued his informative presentation on creating an HD DVD using the built in tools on your Mac.
Both presentations can be downloaded and viewed http://www.sierramousetrap.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/KeithThomassenScanning.key_.zip and http://www.sierramousetrap.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/KeithThomassen_making-HD-movie.key_.zip

	• We were also graced with several new members and guests that we will rectify the introduction issue: it was my fault for taking so much time on the give-aways, please accept my apology and be prepared to share you and your story with us.

THE MISSING DISCOUNT CODE

The reason for this late newsletter is that I am upset and embarrassed that I have misplaced the email from Rad Tech and Zach about the discount code for the group. "HOW CAN YOU MISPLACE AN EMAIL?" Well… I use over 60 email addresses for many and varied reasons, but the correspondence with Zach at Radtech has been through smmug@sierramoustrap,org and smmug@ariapictures.com or so I think. I sometime quickly send out an email to someone not realizing the address I am sending it out with — some of you can attest to that when they get one from gefa_web@theunion.net or some other off the wall address.

Another reason for the misplacement is that I do to keep my computer a mean, clean, computing machine is save emails as PDF's, RTF's, or .eml files and store them on an external HD and delete them in the email app. I am unsure if I did this to the email from Zach. I am unable to find it in my folder where I store emails of the sort, I am unable to find anything of that nature using find, spotlight, and find any file on any storage media I have — spent HOURS looking for it and almost have gone to tears.

This is not the only thing that has eluded me. I have misplaced a folder with all my information, files, and emails from the cast & crew for THE GOLdEN TREE that has there bio's, pictures, and correspondence — some very important information. NOw I would have EVER just up and deleted it, but it is not in the directory with all my other COMPLETED productions.

Needless to say, I am at my wit's end over these disappearing items, and no, I am very meticulous and anal about backup and storage when it come s to important items… but these two have just vanished from all sources.

So when Zach replies, I will get that put to everyone — and it IS RADTECH.us.

May Meeting topics

We are feverishly putting together an exciting list of topics to bring you.
thank you – gerald martin davenport
